Who will (and should) play in the 2012 MLB Futures Game

I don't know if anyone is like me, but I love minor league baseball. What's better than watching the top up-and-coming stars of baseball rise through the ranks before the reach the big leagues? Thus, one of my favorite displays of talent is the Futures Game, which usually occurs two days before the MLB All-Star Game. Each team gets an opportunity to showcase their top talent, and all the top prospects get a chance to shine on the big stage a little earlier than their big league call up.

While everyone awaits the Futures Game roster, which will come later in June, I decided to make a list of who I think will (and should) be included. Now it wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Each MLB team must represented but no team may have more than two players. It's difficult to determine who should be playing in the game when you have to consider the difficulties of finding a foreign-born catcher that deserves to play in the game over a star pitcher.

Without further ado, here's who will (and should) be in the 2012 Futures Game:

I don't believe Anthony Rizzo or Trevor Bauer will play in the Futures Game because of their inevitable call ups to the big leagues, but until they are officially on a big league roster, they will stay on the list. The list will be updated as injuries and call ups occur until the official roster is released.

    1. Nice catch, he will be switched out for somebody else.

  2. Yeison Asencio with such a SSS? You sure?

    1. I'm sticking with my gut on Yeison Asencio. The World team usually loves their young stars and he is performing well (although a small sample size) in the Midwest League. I could see the World team going with SD's Edinson Rincon if Asencio doesn't make it.

  3. i like who you put in for the Los Angeles Angels Of Anaheim, may i suggest as well C.J. Cron or Travis Witherspoon

    1. Thanks and both are good choices. Unfortunately, it's harder to find top world players compared to ones from the U.S., especially since each team can only have two guys. Thus, I had to go with Segura and Pena. I considered Cron initially but Mike Olt for the rival Rangers is having a better season and I think more deserving.

    2. i understand, but look at Travis Witherspoons stats, he has also hit for the cycle, i would put him over segura but yeah i see the whole point of the world players

    3. his stats are .320 BA, 6 HR, 26 RBI, 24 SB, in 62 games. he is only playing in high A inland Empire but those are very impresive stats, but you are right Segura would play for World so yeah i understand

    4. Yea you make a great point for Witherspoon. He's improved tremendously this year. I saw him play several times last year in the Midwest League, and he's been shocking me with how well he's been doing in hi-A. I always knew he was fast but never saw the power he's showing this season. He also used to strike out a ton. However if he keeps it up, since he probably will be stuck in double-A next season, he will have a chance to make the 2013 Futures Game.

  4. What makes you choose Willy Garcia over Gregory Polanco or even a RF like Avisail Garcia who's in a higher level.

    1. Both guys you named are good choices as well. I took Willy Garcia over Polanco because he's been better over the course of his career, especially last year. And while Avisail Garcia could end up being chosen just as easily as Willy Garcia, I like Willy just a little bit better since he is a year and half younger.
